Explore the story of the Transatlantic Cable - its significance in global communications and its heritage
Over 150 years ago, the first successful transatlantic telegraph cable was laid between Foilhammerum Bay, Valentia Island in Ireland and Heart's Content in Newfoundland, Canada, thereby reducing the time to communicate between the Old and New Worlds from weeks to minutes. The technology revolution had begun which had a profound effect on commerce around the globe. It all started here!
In May 2016, the Valentia Transatlantic Cable Foundation Board was
established with the objective of the “ raising and application of
money and other resources to advance the scientific heritage of, and
community development on, Valentia Island and to promote Valentia
Island as a site which should be included on UNESCO’s World Heritage
List.
"Since the discovery of Columbus nothing has been done in any degree comparable to the vast enlargement which has thus been given to the sphere of human activity. The Atlantic Telegraph has undone the declaration of 1776 and has gone far to make us once again one people."

No matter how big or small, your donation will be very kindly appreciated.
Our foundation’s objective is to advance the scientific heritage of, and community development on, Valentia Island and to promote Valentia Island as a site which should be included on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
Donations are a vital part of this, and will help us to achieve our goal.
"The significance of what happened on Valentia Island, as evidenced by its associated and remaining features, gives it a strong chance of becoming a World Heritage site due to its Outstanding Universal Value"
